— I loved going to college. I really did. You'd get down into the lunchroom and you got into other stimu- ... It was a very stimulating time. I did a lot of reading and a lot of thinking. And it was great. It was a time where you could discuss things. The classes were not that large and we used to have exciting discussions of all kinds, in the English Department, in the History Department... In the Psych I didn't remember such big discussions 'cause it was very biologically oriented in those days.

— And I was active in Hillel. I loved Hillel. I spent all my time.. I'd get home at midnight 'cause I was busy at Hillel. We'd have all kinds of committees, drama, music. It was a delicious place to be.

— For a little while I joined the House Plan— a house plan is the City College's sorority— but that was not for me. I was a nursery teacher part of the time while I was a student so I didn't have that much time.

— I majored in English and worked on the newspaper. I didn't want to be a teacher, I knew that, and I thought I might be a journalist. And so working on the newspaper was supposedly good experience. But I never became a journalist because I didn't have the temperament for it... and I did become an English teacher.

— I majored in French. I don't know why. I just kept, you know, what I did in high school, which was four years of French. And I took a lot of music courses and I minored in psychology.

— And the teachers, I think, were very good. We had some great art teachers during that time. Some of them have become important artists. I took a couple of art courses just 'cause it was nice. I found it very stimulating.

— The English teachers were not all that inspiring. There was an Englishman who was a little more exotic because he spoke with a British accent and he made it a little more exciting. But I was a good student and I did what had to be done— writing papers and going to the library and reading the textbooks on the train.
